Siapa bilang ranah Hollywood tidak lagi mampu melahirkan film-film horor seram, kalau belakangan ini mereka keseringan mendaur-ulang film-film horor klasik mereka, lebih hopeless lagi keliling dunia untuk mencari film untuk di-remake, walau tidak semua yang versi “hollywood” itu buruk. Ah lupakan sejenak soal itu, karena lewat “Insidious” sekali lagi saya bisa berteriak seperti anak kecil ingusan yang ketakutan di tengah malam, entah itu karena pintu lemari terbuka sendiri atau mendengar suara aneh dari kolong kasur. Sial, tapi itulah yang terjadi ketika saya menonton film ini, walau tidak sampai ngompol, tetapi saya akui ini adalah film terseram yang saya tonton dalam kurun waktu beberapa tahun belakangan ini, melampaui semua seri “Paranormal Activity” tentunya. Ah berbicara soal horor mokumenter yang fenomenal itu, sang kreator Oren Peli juga terlibat dalam film ini bukan duduk di bangku sutradara melainkan sebagai produser.
Renai dan Josh Lambert (Rose Byrne dan Patrick Wilson), beserta ketiga anak mereka, baru saja pindah ke rumah yang baru. Harapan akan kehidupan yang normal dan bahagia sepertinya segera terganggu, karena tidak lama kemudian, Renai mulai merasa mereka tidak sendirian di rumah tersebut. Belum selesai masalah yang satu, masalah lain muncul menyusul, Dalton (Ty Simpkins) yang sedang berada di loteng terjatuh lalu kemudian berteriak histeris karena melihat sesuatu. Jika beberapa tahun ini Amerika juga gemar melucuti nyali kita dengan film-film slasher yang berjamur sejak kesuksesan SAW, walau saya tidak akan pernah bosan disajikan potongan-potongan tubuh berlumuran darah, yang selalu saya respon dengan tarian penuh kegirangan memutari isi perut yang dijadikan api unggun. Jujur saya rindu dengan film-film horor yang sanggup membuat nyali ini menutup wajahnya dan mental ini berteriak histeris ketakutan. Amerika pernah melakukan itu dengan horor-horor klasiknya, sampai akhirnya dibuat bungkam dengan horor Asia, yah walau keduanya sebetulnya memiliki gaya yang berbeda dalam urusan menakuti penonton. “Insidious” syukurnya menjawab kerinduan tersebut, duo James Wan dan Leigh Whannell yang sama-sama pernah bekerja sama dalam “SAW”, kembali berduet tidak lagi menghadirkan horor yang hanya buang-buang bergalon-galon darah, tetapi menantang penonton apakah mereka berani membuka mata ketika rumah hantu versi mereka dari awal memang punya misi untuk memaksa kita menutup mata. James Wan yang duduk dibangku sutradara dan Leigh Whannell yang selain menulis cerita juga ikut “narsis” seperti yang dia lakukan di “SAW”, membuktikan jika Amerika masih bisa membuat film yang…sayangnya…begitu seram.
Tidak dipungkiri memang jika “Insidious” punya cara-cara menakuti yang dibilang sudah basi, namun cantiknya, James Wan mampu meracik ramuan lama tersebut untuk terlihat kembali menakutkan. Suara-suara aneh dari loteng, barang-barang yang bergerak sendiri, sampai penampakannya disiapkan dengan matang untuk tidak terburu-buru menakuti tapi perlahan-lahan menancapkan kengerian tersebut di pikiran penonton. “Insidious” cerdik menumpuk rasa penasaran, membuat saya selalu ingin mengintip ada apa di pojokan itu atau bayangan siapa yang muncul itu, tetapi ketika saya begitu bernafsu untuk tahu, film ini dengan begitu asshole menempatkan jebakan berupa penampakan yang tepat, sebuah kengerian yang tidak tanggung-tanggung, tepat sasaran dalam urusan mengagetkan dan sekaligus menyeramkan. Terkadang penampakan itu muncul disaat yang tidak terduga, tidak disangka-sangka, well itu sudah biasa mungkin untuk film horor, namun James Wan mampu menyajikannya tidak berlebihan, tidak maruk, tidak bernafsu, begitu sabar untuk membiarkan kita memproses sendiri penampakan apa yang kita lihat tadi, akhirnya belum apa-apa kita sudah merinding lebih dahulu menunggu penampakan berikutnya muncul.
“Insidious” sepertinya sudah memberi peringatan kepada kita lewat openingnya yang err “seksi” itu, seksi sampai-sampai mulut saya melotot dan mata ini bungkam. Iyah kawan-kawan “Insidious” punya adegan pembuka yang apik nan ciamik, memberi pemanasan pada jantung karena nantinya kita akan dipacu untuk dag-dig-dug sepanjang film. Adegan pembuka di film ini mengingatkan saya dengan opening “Drag Me To Hell”, membuat saya jatuh cinta pada pandangan pertama, bisa dibilang seperti itu. Apalagi dengan musik yang menyayat-nyayat, dari awal iringan musiknya benar-benar mampu mengantarkan saya untuk “beristirahat dengan tenang” sampai ke ending, Joseph Bishara menghadirkan musik yang bisa begitu klop untuk menemani adegan demi adegan horor di film ini, pas membangun mood sekaligus kengerian dari cerita rumah berhantu yang menjadi pondasi dasar kisah di “Insidious”. Dalam soal bercerita, James Wan juga mampu mengesekusi setiap baris cerita yang ditulis Leigh Whannell dengan nyaman, membuat penonton tidak hanya disajikan kehororan film ini tetapi juga peduli dengan cerita. Jarang-jarang film horor yang juga peduli dengan isi ceritanya dan “Insidious” salah-satu yang bisa lakukan itu secara berbarengan dengan kemunculan hantu demi hantu.
Walaupun nantinya ada penonton yang tidak peduli dengan cerita, “Insidious” pastinya bisa mudah untuk disukai karena telah berhasil menjabarkan kata “seram” dengan begitu efektif. Ditambah lagi “Insidious”—lewat duo sinematografer David Brewer dan John Leonetti—dikemas begitu cantik, saya begitu suka dengan pergerakan kameranya begitu pas ketika penonton diajak mengikuti para pemain menelusuri setiap sudut rumah, setiap kejutan dan bagian yang membuat bulu kuduk ini berdiri pun dipotret dengan apik. Satu lagi yang saya suka adalah bagaimana film ini menyorot bagian depan rumah, begitu menarik dan khas. Bagaimana dengan para pemainnya? Rose Byrne dan Patrick Wilson pun bermain dengan baik dalam menggiring kita untuk setiap saat ketakutan, penasaran, dan juga peduli dengan apa yang mereka rasakan, termasuk masalah anaknya yang koma tanpa alasan yang jelas. “Insidious” memang tidak lepas dari bagian minus, tipikal film horor Hollywood yang terlalu banyak penjelasan dan kadang mengarah ke film action itu untungnya tidak terlalu mengganggu. Saya juga tidak lagi peduli dengan kekurangannya karena toh “Insidious” begitu klasik dalam menghadirkan “keseruan” sebuah film horor. Silahkan jewer kuping saya kalau film ini tidak seram…tapi pelan-pelan aja ya.
Awalnya, Dini, Tika, Sherry dan Putri hanya berencana merayakan malam terakhir Putri sebelum keberangkatannya untuk melanjutkan sekolah di Melbourne. Atas ide Sherry, walaupun mereka masih di bawah umur, dengan bantuan seorang fotografer Tyo, akhirnya mereka berhasil masuk ke club yang sangat eksklusif. Di sanalah kekacauan mulai terjadi. Anak-anak yang belum pernah mencoba kehidupan malam diberi minuman, dan ternyata banyak kejutan yang menanti mereka.
Mereka harus menghadapi berbagai tipe orang-orang di kehidupan malam yang mencoba memanfaatkan kenaifan dan kepolosan mereka. Sampai akhirnya begitu keesokan pagi, Dini cs terbangun di sebuah hotel dalam keadaan berantakan. Anak-anak ini pun panik, apalagi mereka dikejar oleh Allan, pria misterius yang sepertinya tidak putus asa untuk bisa menangkap mereka. Dini sendiri tersadar kalau ia berkenalan dengan Ben, vokalis band terkenal di malam yang sama. Sherry bangun dalam keadaan luka-luka. Sementara itu Tika malah bangun dengan memakai baju yang bukan miliknya. Sedangkan Putri hilang diculik saat mereka berusaha lari dari kejaran Allan. Apa yang sebetulnya terjadi di malam itu? Bisakah mereka menemukan Putri kembali sebelum semuanya terlambat?
